40 MRID Resolve to Host Annual Anti-Racism Workshops
Issue: Interpreters of color have regularly reported experiencing both explicit and subtle racist acts and microaggressions. As DDBHH consumers of color are woefully underserved by not having interpreters who reflect their identities, there is a need to support and encourage more interpreters of color in the field.
Proposed Solution: MRID resolve to host at least an annual anti-racism workshop.
Expected outcome: Higher retention of interpreters of color; DDBHH consumers of color experience greater satisfaction in interpreting services
Who is impacted: Interpreters
Timeline: 6 months

Reviewer Feedback and Insights
Interpreter
Comments from Interpreters agree that requiring interpreters to undergo anti-racism training would be beneficial, but that there are already requirements for interpreters to take Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc (RID)’s training on Interpreter Power, Privilege, and Oppression (PPO). One comment advocates providing a space for interpreters of color to share their experiences.
Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing
Comments from DDBHH Consumers agree that workshops should be provided to DDBHH consumers themselves, indicating the need to foster foster awareness and cultural competence when consumers interact with interpreters of color, and for consumers to understand racism and discrimination within the interpreting field.
System Stakeholder
Comments from System stakeholders expressed questions whether MRID has enough diversity of presenters to provide the workshops. Another comment mentions that this solution would require MRID to vote on a motion for annual anti-racism workshops.
